YOUTH BYSTANDER

INTERVENTION

TRAINING

MAY 2021

To combat the current rise in harassment and discrimination and to also proactively prepare for the future increase of hate incidents, Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Chicago partnered with Hollaback! and CAIR-Chicago to scale up locally-led bystander hate incident intervention trainings for community members.

It’s so important to continue the conversation around the movement to #stopasianhate and empower youth to take action. With the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes, PV youth have been interested in learning more about how to be active bystanders.

Asian Americans Advancing Justice Chicago hosted a training specifically for Chinatown youth.  Our youth learned tools to mediate anti-Asian micro-aggressions or racism and take action safely and effectively in an online bystander intervention training. During the training, they learned about the 5 D’s – Distract, Delegate, Document, Delay, and Direct – and practiced using them in various scenarios. Students also shared why they might hesitate to intervene and learned about the importance of considering their safety first before intervening. Many students expressed that they found the training informative and helpful!
